Press Release – Raiffeisen Bank Bucharest International Marathon 2012

Over 7,000 persons participated in Piața Constituției, on Saturday and Sunday, October 6-7, to the 5th edition of Raiffeisen Bank Bucharest International Marathon hosted by Bucharest.

Within the marathon, there participated runners from over 40 countries, such as: Romania, Spain, Sweden, Israel, Great Britain, Irland, Italy, Etiopia, Kenya, Serbia, Germany, Belarus, Moldova, Hungary, Poland, Japan, Austria, Croatia, France, Czech Republic, Slovenia, Russia, Bulgaria, Estonia, Australia, Belgium, Ukraine. For the first time, the marathon held in Bucharest, was attended by a group of 225 of Dutch runners and also of 250 teams to Relay Marathon Race.

Romanian Athletics Federation which celebrates 150 years organized within RBBIM National Championship Marathon, Seniors, Youth and Junior male and female and National Championship Marathon for Veterans.
Alongside amateurs and professional runners, Romanian Sport stars, world and Olympic champions, have participated in the Popular Race: Andreea Răducan – gymnastics, Otilia Bădescu – table tennis, Doina Ignat and Viorica Susanu –rowing.

The winner of 42, 195 km Marathon, International Section was Kangogo Felix Kipkorir from Kenya, with 2h 15 min 19 sec, followed by his compatriot Choge Amos Kipruto who ranked second, with 2 h 18 min and 49sec, and by the Etiopian Ararso Dibaba Merdasa, with 2 h 19 min 27 sec. To the National Section of the Marathon, Corneschi Ilie Alexandru ranked the first with 2h 36 min and 2 sec. The first place on wheels chair marathon was awarded to Punga Petru.

To the International Women Section of the Marathon, Fekade Almaz Negede, from Etiopia, won the first prize, finishing the race in 2h 38 min 9 sec. On the second position, there was ranked Lorenge Mary Ptikany from Kenya, with 2 h 40 min. Todoran Paula Claudia, from Romania, ranked the third with 2h 48 min and 20 sec. On the National Section of the Marathon, Todoran Paula Claudia ranked the first, with the same timing.

On half – marathon women, the Romanian Bobocel Ancuta won the first prize, finishing the race in 1h 13 min 20 sec. Prundus Mihaela ranked second with 1 h 18 min 52 sec. Moaga Elena ranked third with 1h 21 min 52 sec.

On half – marathon men, Payn Tom from Grean Britain ranked first, finishing the race in 1h 10 min 4 sec. On the second place, there was Ofiteru Bogdan from Romania with 1 h 14 min 30 sec. Gradinaru Florin ranked third, with 1h 18 min 9 sec.

Relay Race was won by Stiinta Bacau (Bacau Science) team,followed by Cei Patru Fantastici (The 4 Fatastics) on the second place.

For the Popular Race, men, the winner was Betej Ionut and Buga Florentina – for women.

It was the second year which hosted a kids day – October 6. The kids Cross-Country was a day specially designed for kids interested in running, which included activities and surprises offered by Raifi, Scooby-Doo and Greeny, and the prizes were offered considering the age group the kids belonged to. The winners of the first prizes were: for 4-5 years age group – Manafu Mara Alexandra (2 min, 20sec) and Ene Stefan (2 min, 16 sec); for 6-7 years age group – Vasile Rut Cristina (2 min, 12 sec) and Heidet Viktor (1 min, 54 sec); for 8-9 years age group– Mihalache Maria (3 min, 54 sec) and Ionel Nicholas (4 min,2 sec); for 10-12 years age group – Vasile Daniela (3 min, 29 sec) and Mititelu Damian (3 min, 19 sec).
There were offered 70 prizes in money, in total value of 30,000 de euro and other hundreds of prizes in products offered by the sponsors and partners of the event.
The novelty of the 2012 edition was that the event was held on a street route secured and closed to the auto traffic on 21 km distance.
Another first on RBBIM 2012 was the big number of corporate teams registered in different races: 202 members of Run4Fun team of PwC Romania, over 150 Raiffeisen Bank runners, VW relay race teams, Kaufland, Amway, GSK, Petrom teams.
Florin Stanciu from Ploiești ran 100 km with the last 42 within RBBIM, for the Kids Forest planted by Viitor Plus and for Pachamama as a stand to raise funds and impress the general public on the Rights of Nature cause.
The organization of the 2012 edition was possible due to the worrk of the 300 volunteers. Most of them were volunteers who registered on the website or students of the Physical Education and Sport University. Others came from Hospice Casa Speranţei, Viitor Plus – the Association for Sustainable Development, Light Into Europe, and United Way – NGOs associated with Raiffeisen Bank Bucharest International Marathon which are beneficiaries of the donations and of the money coming from registration fees. There also contributed in the organization referees and coaches from the Romanian Athletics Federation, the Gendarmerie, Community Police, Traffic Police, Streets Administration, and the Education Department of the City Hall.

About Bucharest International Marathon (BIM) and Bucharest International Half Marathon (BIHM)
As of 2008, Bucharest was included in the international network of marathons, joining the other European capitals which host such races every year. In 2012, there was held the first edition of Petrom Bucharest International Half Marathon. BIM and BIHM are accredited and registered within the international calendar of AIMS (Association of International Marathons and Distance Races).
